Several years ago, my mom and dad moved from our family home to their retirement home. As they were cleaning out the attic, I got a phone call. My mom had a huge box of workbasket magazines from the 1950’s. “Did I want them?” “Well, of course”, I replied.

As I went through each one and absorbed all the great information, I came across 3 patterns for baby items. This picture is one of them. It’s probably from the late 1940’s. My mom tells me that everyone went to this woman’s house and she would type the pattern and sell the yarn.

Making up this pattern has been on my To-Do list for a long time. I finally started it. There’s no mention of gauge or what size the sweater will be when it’s done. The only clue that I have is to use a Size 3 needle. That’s written in the upper right hand corner.

Some of the directions are pretty hard to read. So I’m following this pattern as best as I can.

I’m using Filatura Di Crosa Dolce Amore in White Multi Color. I cast on 76 stitches and the width seems to be about 10 1/2 inches.

I excited to see this sweater. Hopefully, when it’s done, I will re-type the pattern and will be able to share it with other current knitters and send it on into the future.

I think it’s important not to lose the wonderful patterns and skills of those knitters from the past. Don’t you?
